This two-hour workshop will help students’ understanding and practice in two crucial areas of research-based academic writing: the organization of the message and the social positioning of the writer in relation to the reader and the writer’s knowledge claims.
Work on organization involves identifying and addressing two areas: the preview and review of ideas in the text, and issues with the flow of ideas that often arise in drafts. As for social positioning, two areas are also addressed: the options available to writers for managing interpersonal relations with readers, as well as writers’ options for evaluating their knowledge claims.
On completing the workshop, participants should have an improved vocabulary for recognizing and describing organizational and social aspects of academic writing, and an expanded capacity for addressing issues in these areas that may arise in their drafts. Participants are encouraged to bring a sample of their academic writing to the workshop.
