Join Linda Gilkeson for a class focussed on intensive food production in small spaces and community gardens. She will cover year-round planting schedules, the best varieties to grow and low maintenance tips for fitting a productive garden into your busy lifestyle. Learn how to feed the soil, sowing and plant methods, and details on growing the most popular crops, such as tomatoes, beans, lettuce, etc. Linda will address issues particular to urban gardens, from getting materials to the site and addressing pollination problems to how to avoid the spread of pests and diseases (especially in community gardens).
Instructor: Linda Gilkeson, Entomologist and Author - Linda Gilkeson earned a PhD in Entomology from McGill University. She spent 5 years as the research director of a company rearing beneficial insects, a decade working on pesticide reduction programs for the provincial government, and served as President of the Entomological Society of Canada, the Professional Pest Management Association of BC and the Entomological Society of BC. Linda has written pest management training manuals, organic gardening books and numerous magazine articles. Her self-published book: Year Around Harvest: Winter Gardening on the Coast has been the definitive year-round gardening book for local gardeners for over a decade. Her recent book, Backyard Bounty, has been a BC best seller for the last two years and she has just released a new and expanded edition of her West Coast Gardening: Natural Insect, Weed and Disease Control. Currently, she teaches Master Gardener programs in the province, and gives various workshops and public talks on gardening and pest management.
