Sustainability is a grand challenge that humanity must strive to address in the years ahead. Disruptive innovations in materials science hold the key to enable a list of critical technologies that could support sustainable development in different areas such as water, energy, food, and plastics.
In response to this call, a group of prominent scientists coming from various research institutions in North America, UK, continental Europe and Asia work together creating a platform coined ‘Sustainable Materials Research Summit (SMART)’ to foster knowledge sharing and academic excellence in the field.
SMART is a global endeavour for the common good, aiming to gather international experts at the forefront of research in the field of sustainable materials including naturally occurring and manufactured materials. The first annual meeting was held in Kunming in 2021 and the next year’s meeting will take place in Vancouver, Canada.
UBC is hosting the 2nd Sustainable Materials Research Summit on August 7th-9th, 2022. The registration will open in February 2022. More details can be found on the website.
