BACKGROUND

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a third-party certification program and an internationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. From 2008 onwards, all new campus construction and major renovations at UBC are mandated to be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certified.

UBC's Vancouver campus has 31 LEED Gold or higher standard buildings.

 

LEED promotes a holistic approach to sustainability by recognizing building performance in five key areas of human and environmental health, including:

  1. Sustainable site development
  2. Water efficiency
  3. Energy efficiency
  4. Materials selection
  5. Indoor environmental quality

LEED certification is based on an independent assessment of total points achieved in the above categories. Four levels of certification can be granted: certified, silver, gold and platinum.

SUPPORTING LEED AT UBC

LEED v4
UBC worked on a UBC LEED Implementation Guides for LEED v4 aimed at design teams working to achieve LEED Gold certification on new UBC building projects. It has been developed to support all UBC policies and in particular is aligned with the UBC Vancouver Campus Plan, the Technical Guidelines, and the Climate Action Plan.

The guides provide helpful information as well indicating which credits are mandatory, optional, or not available at UBC.

LEED BUILDINGS AT UBC

As of 2008, all publicly-owned new construction and major renovation projects over 600 m2 in British Columbia must achieve LEED Gold certification. UBC green building policies are key to ensuring that green building practices are implemented in a manner that helps us achieve UBC’s sustainability goals.
