Wed, September 24, 2014 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM IRVING K. BARBER LEARNING CENTRE. In the first of a series of CTLT workshops around educational research, special guest Michael Grove (Director of the STEM Education Centre at the University of Birmingham) will introduce the field to those looking to extend their professional practice by undertaking educational research. This session will provide an accessible overview of the field, discussing why engaging in educational research is a worthwhile activity for faculty across disciplines and exploring the differences between educational research, disciplinary research, scholarship and scholarly teaching. Participants will be introduced to a variety of methods commonly employed, key research concepts, and important ethical considerations.
This session will be interactive and it is intended participants will leave with not only an understanding of what constitutes an effective research question, but will also have begun to develop their own research questions based around their own areas of interest. It will set the stage for upcoming sessions on methodology, data collection, data analysis and other topics that will be offered by CTLT as a part of this monthly series.
