Fri, January 10, 2020 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM AQUATIC ECOSYSTEMS RESEARCH LABORATORY (AERL). 25% of fish caught in the ocean don’t land directly on our plates. They're churned into something called fishmeal. That fishmeal is mainly used to feed farmed fish, which account for more than half of the seafood we consume globally.

But what are the true costs of this process? UBC Global Reporting Program and NBC News travelled to China, Peru and West Africa - key locations in the global fishmeal industry - to find out.

Field reporters on this project included IOF’s Caroline Graham (China) and Thomas Smith (West Africa).

Panellists:
Peter Klein, Professor, UBC Journalism and Executive Director, Global Reporting Program
Caroline Graham, IOF M.Sc. student (China)
Thomas Smith, IOF M.Sc. student (West Africa)

Moderator:
Monique Rodrigues (Peru), UBC Journalism alum

Location: AERL Theatre
