They're churned into something called fishmeal. That fishmeal is mainly used to feed farmed fish, which account for more than half of the seafood we consume globally.
But what are the true costs of this process? UBC Global Reporting Program and NBC News travelled to China, Peru and West Africa - key locations in the global fishmeal industry - to find out.
