Fri, October 5, 2018 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM AQUATIC ECOSYSTEMS RESEARCH LABORATORY (AERL). Speaker: Dr. Philippe Tortell
Professor, Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science, The University of British Columbia
In this presentation, Dr. Tortell will discuss ongoing work of a joint university-DFO consortium of researchers examining climate change impacts on marine ecosystem services of the Subarctic Pacific. Together, the team is working to develop new automated ship-board measurement systems and remote sensing approaches to better quantify plankton biomass and productivity over a range of scales. Working closely with the Line P and La Perouse time-series programs, the team has deployed a suite of dissolved gas analyzers and optical sensors to quantify net community production, phytoplankton biomass and taxonomic composition. These observations led the development and validation of remote sensing algorithms that can be applied on synoptic scales. The team is also working to develop new ship-based methods of zooplankton productivity, and coupled ocean ecosystem models exploring the impacts of various climate scenarios on potential future fisheries yields. Working with DFO applied science staff, the consortium seeks to use our new observational and modelling tools to better support salmon stock assessment and future forecasting. The goal of this presentation is to stimulate tighter collaborative links between fisheries scientists and oceanographers.
