Dr van den Bosch will provide an overview of the global burden of disease and how the changing scenario requires a shift from traditional medical interventions to a stronger focus on social and physical environmental interventions and health promotion. She will particularly discuss:
- Main risk factors for non-communicable diseases and how those relate to the environment
- Current research approaches for studying correlations between natural environments and health, including examples from own studies
- Epidemiological and experimental evidence
- Implementation in public health actions and urban planning, with examples from WHO’s work on environmental health indicators
- Ideas for the future – hypotheses, research plans, and opportunities

Bio
Dr. Matilda van den Bosch is a physician with clinical experience from general practice and radiology, whose current research combines medical knowledge with studies in ecology, land use and landscape planning. Her aim is to understand the relation between public health and the environment by methods such as GIS-analysis, experimental trials, and epidemiology. The work is broadly acknowledged and she has published a line of scientific articles, book chapters, and educational books. She works as a consultant for WHO, is a directing board member of the International Society of Doctors for the Environment, and is president elect for the Swedish Society of Behavioural Medicine.
