Co-Founder of Skipper Otto’s Community Supported Fishery
Location: AERL Theatre
Fisherman Shaun Strobel will discuss the commercial salmon fleet in BC, including the history of the industry and how technology, economics, and policy have lead to the current state of the sector. He will also discuss Community Supported Fishery and what Skipper Otto’s is doing and trying to achieve.
Skipper Otto’s Community Supported Fishery is a seafood subscription service that creates a direct connection between BC fishing families and thoughtful consumers across Canada. This partnership fosters the protection of ocean resources while providing our members with premium, wild, fairly-traded, Ocean Wise seafood along with the full story of who caught each piece of fish when, where, and how.
Shaun is a 2nd generation gillnetter who began fishing with his father at age 7. He has witnessed a dramatic decline in the small boat fleet over the past 40 years. Dismayed at problems he saw in the British Columbia fishery, Shaun and his wife Sonia started the first community supported fishery in Canada as an alternate model. During breaks from fishing, Shaun has worked as a history and marine tech high school teacher and has studied labour organization in the BC fishing industry.
