We are what we eat. But where does it come from? How does it get here?
Everything we eat tells a story. While cooking a traditional Filipino dish in real time, writer/performer Jovanni Sy (Artistic Director of Richmond’s Gateway Theatre) takes us on an entertaining and thought-provoking trip through history as he weaves stories of conquest, imperialistic desires, and colonialism through the construction (and deconstruction) of the Rellenong Bangus. Audiences will immerse themselves in the tantalizing aromas of a kitchen, and a tasting plate is served at the conclusion of the piece. A Taste of Empire is truly a feast for the mind and the palate.
Each year, Boca del Lupo presents the Micro Performance Series (MPS). Centered on and around Granville Island, these productions are created and performed by local, national and international artists working across disciplines in intimate and small-scale forms. Be sure to follow Boca del Lupo on Facebook and Twitter, or check our website and join the mailing list for the most up to date details on what is playing next.
This performance is part of the UBC Future of Food Global Dialogue Series which brings together food security and sustainability experts from across North America to engage the UBC community and the public around global food security issues. The series is jointly sponsored by the Faculty of Land and Food Systems, Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability, Liu Institute for Global Issues, and the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm.
