This course is part of the UBC Future Global Leaders Pre-University Program for high school students ages 15-18, and is offered at UBC Vancouver. This program offers the option to stay in a UBC student residence during the program or commute daily.
Some of the most pressing questions about the world, and our place in it, raise moral issues and present deep philosophical dilemmas. Are we obligated to future generations? How many people should there be on our planet? Should we sacrifice the life of one person to save the lives of many? Debate moral issues and think about these puzzles – which might not have a definite solution.
Who should take this course?
This course is ideal if you’re interested in studying law, policy, science or ethics, and if you want to develop critical and analytical thinking skills.
Your instructor
CHASE DORITY is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Philosophy at the University of British Columbia. His research interests include issues in the ethics of technology, especially as they relate to the use of algorithms and artificial intelligence in society, and philosophical issues in the mind and brain sciences. He received his bachelor’s degree from Erskine College, and a master’s degree in philosophy from Northern Illinois University.
