This course is part of the UBC Future Global Leaders Pre-University Program for high school students ages 15-18, and is offered at UBC Vancouver. This program offers the option to stay in a UBC student residence during the program or commute daily.
Why do celebrities influence us? How can people commit terrible atrocities like the Holocaust? Why do we sometimes miss obvious things, like looking for your glasses when they were on your head the entire time? What do people consider attractive in a romantic partner? Why are some people more persuasive than others?
These, and many others, are some of the intriguing questions we explore and answer in this course. Have fun understanding how other people and the social world around us influence our psychology. Topics include persuasion, prejudice, social influence, interpersonal attraction and many others. After completing the course, you’ll have a broad understanding of the psychological processes that affect us daily.

This course is ideal if you’re interested in psychology, sociology, public relations, marketing or public health.
Your instructor
JASON MARTENS, PhD, is a researcher and psychology instructor at the University of British Columbia. His research focuses on emotion, culture and meaning. Jason is the author of multiple papers in peer-reviewed journals, including Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, PLOS ONE, Cognition and Emotion, Self and Identity and others. He has taught courses in social psychology, cultural psychology, personality psychology, introduction to psychology and others.
