Fri, September 19, 2014 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM IRVING K. BARBER LEARNING CENTRE. Please join us for a talk by visiting scholar Dr. Michael Grove. Dr. Michael Grove is the inaugural Director of the University of Birmingham’s STEM Education Centre
At this event Dr. Grove will discuss the 'mathematics problem' which describes the difficulties students face when studying mathematics in higher education. Fifteen years ago problem appeared restricted to the disciplines of mathematics, physics, and engineering, and was particularly evident as students made the transition to university study. There is now compelling evidence that the mathematics problem has broadened with it now encompassing a wide range of disciplines with its effects also felt across all undergraduate years.
Since 2005, there has been focused effort within the mathematics community to address this problem, and a range of interventions have been developed and implemented. During this talk I will discuss the evidence for the mathematics problem and the approaches that have been collectively implemented to offer practical solutions that aid learners from a range of discipline address their mathematical difficulties. I will go on to explore how the original definition of the ‘Mathematics Problem’ may have changed and how different solutions are needed to tackling these emerging aspects. Although the primary perspective will be upon practice within the UK, I will discuss ideas and approaches that are transferable across continents and disciplines!
