Green College Leading Scholars' Series
Feeding the World without Destroying the Planet
Navin Ramankutty, Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability, UBC
5-6:30 pm, reception to follow
Coach House, Green College, 6201 Cecil Green Park Road, UBC
Our food production system is one of the biggest environmental threats. Farming is a major driver of deforestation, biodiversity loss, climate change, as well as freshwater depletion and pollution. There is contentious debate regarding potential responses to this challenge. In fact, there is even contention about how to frame the challenge.
Navin Ramankutty, Green College Leading Scholar, will present an evaluative framework that assesses how diverse farming systems contribute to various objectives of the food system. The framework suggests that the contention is mainly a result of the focus of different disciplines on different aspects of the food system.
