Linking human health to marine environmental health: Coastal Scene Investigation (CSI): Solving environmental toxicology puzzles using clues from marine pollution, transsexual snails and multitoxin resistant Sydney Tar Pond fish.
An introduction to environmental toxicology and the linkages between human and environmental health. Dr. Bard will be presenting results from her multidisciplinary research program which examines molecular and cellular mechanisms of multixenobiotic resistance in pollution hardy species as a model for multidrug resistance in human health. These mechanistic studies are used in combination with biomarker studies to explain organismal, population and ecosystem level toxicological effects from contaminants. Pathologies in contaminant exposed marine species can serve as an early warning system for potential human health effects. Thus presenting an opportunity to regulate pollution abatement and enact risk management measures to minimize or avoid deleterious effects to human populations and the environment.
