Mixed-Media Art Installation and Seafood Ethics Open Forum

A mixed-media art installation introduces Pacific herring as “Soul Fish.” An evening of video, art, and an open forum on seafood ethics with international scholars, artists, and civil society representatives. The evening begins with Herring Chapters, excerpts from the award winning documentary film, Haida Gwaii: On the Edge of the World (Charles Wilkinson and Tina Schliessler). In Herring Quest, Haida Gwaii community members speak about what herring means to them and how they think the Haida Gwaii herring fisheries should be managed (Mimi E. Lam and Tom Hackett). Original Haida artwork, Herring People, a series of eight hand-pulled serigraphs, depicts the interconnectedness of herring with beings in all of the natural realms – undersea, earth, and sky (April White-SGaana Jaad). Civil society representatives will highlight various ethical challenges in managing resources that couple both marine food webs and human value chains. An open forum will conclude the evening with a broad conversation on emerging issues in seafood ethics.
