Proceeds from this fundraiser will support the SPEC School Gardens Program at Thunderbird Elementary School.* The school is located across the street from the largest social housing project in BC where many of the students live. The school has many vulnerable students who, in spite of the challenges that their families face, are resilient and amazing. Many are from disadvantaged families, single-parent households, and new immigrant and refugee families. Many of these students do not have yards and would otherwise not have an opportunity to be exposed to gardening. SPEC’s programming provides these students an opportunity to connect to food, nature and their environment by introducing the power of gardens. The Thunderbird school garden is an empowering way to engage students in real life experiences, where they learn about food security and how to grow their own organic fruits and veggies.
Tree chipping is generously supported by UBC Building Operations and UBC Custodial Services.
*Funds may be used for other school garden purposes as needed.
