Valid ID card required.). Join us for a walk in the Garden exploring native plants and plant pressing. This ‘walkshop’ will introduce some common native plants and how to identify them, their uses, and techniques for pressing and drying plants.
Participants will learn:
• How to identify some native plants and plant-specific characteristics
• Ways in which native plants are used culturally and socially
• Method of preparing, pressing, and drying plants
• How the Garden’s dried plant collection is used for scientific research
Beryl Zhuang is the Curatorial Coordinator at UBC Botanical Garden where she is responsible for the plant data management. She graduated with an M.Sc. in bioinformatics from UBC and enjoys analyzing biodiversity data. She is passionate about making beautiful specimens for plant documentation.
Christina Prehn is the Education Assistant at UBC Botanical Garden where she develops and supports educational programming in the Garden. She earned her B.Sc. from Texas A&M University where she studied Recreation, Park and Tourism Sciences and has great interest in ecology and community engagement. She is passionate about creating meaningful connections between people and nature and inspiring environmental stewardship.
Important Notes: Please dress for the weather and bring footwear suitable for all terrains. This walkshop will go ahead rain or shine. The plant pressing demonstration will take place in our covered outdoor classroom.
Cancellation Policies: A $5.00 processing fee per attendee is charged if cancellation notice is less than 7 days prior to your scheduled program. There is no fee for transferring the registration to another person. Cancellations can be made by contacting garden.programs@ubc.ca. In the event that a program is cancelled by UBC Botanical Garden, we will offer the option of transferring to another program or obtaining a full refund.
