This course is part of the UBC Future Global Leaders Pre-University Program for high school students ages 15-18, and is offered at UBC Vancouver. This program offers the option to stay in a UBC student residence during the program or commute daily.
Investigate a range of contemporary topics, including the relationship between public order and violent crime, innovations in drug enforcement, forensic psychiatry, restorative justice, wrongful conviction, geographic profiling in hunting serial criminals, structural violence, advocacy and the law. Examine crime from the point of view of anthropology and sociology and learn to apply social science methods to better understand and address crime.

This course is ideal if you’re interested in criminology, anthropology, sociology, psychology, law, enforcement, mental health, forensic psychiatry or public policy.
Your instructor
DAN SMALL, PhD, is a medical anthropologist and adjunct professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia. For 20 years, Dan has been active in the fields of medical regulation, medical assessment, the forensic psychiatric system and community mental health.
