This course is part of the UBC Future Global Leaders Pre-University Program for high school students ages 15-18, and is offered at UBC Vancouver. This program offers the option to stay in a UBC student residence during the program or commute daily.
Get an introduction to film and digital media as dynamic platforms for storytelling, discussion and exchange, with a focus on narrative and documentary films. In workshop-style classes, explore aesthetics, composition, video editing, lighting, camera and sound techniques, as well as writing and researching for short films.
Film screenings and readings augment in-class discussions and encourage critical analysis. The course highlights the artistic and creative potential of film and digital media to explore contemporary socio-political issues. Previous filmmaking experience is not necessary.

Your instructor
ALEJANDRO YOSHIZAWA is an adjunct professor in the Department of Theatre and Film and the Asian Canadian and Asian Migration Studies program at UBC. His films have been shown at film festivals and exhibitions worldwide. His last feature film, the award-winning documentary All Our Father’s Relations (allourfathersrelations.com), premiered in 2016 and was broadcast on CBC and Knowledge Network. Academically, Alejandro is interested in oral history, digital storytelling and the use of film as a teaching tool.
