This course is part of the UBC Future Global Leaders Pre-University Program for high school students ages 15-18, and is offered at UBC Vancouver. This program offers the option to stay in a UBC student residence during the program or commute daily.
One in two people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. One in four people will die of cancer. Discuss the biological mechanisms that underlie cancer development. How does a cell gain an ability to proliferate uncontrollably, invade nearby tissues and spread throughout the body? Learn about cancer therapies, the history of the disease and why so many countries are racing to end cancer once and for all.
Who should take this course?
This course is ideal if you’re interested in biological sciences or medical sciences.
Your instructor
SOFYA LANGMAN is a PhD student in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia and a graduate research assistant at the BC Cancer Research Centre. Her research focuses on childhood brain tumours, and cancer adaptations to micro-environmental stresses.
