In this era of globalization, nationalism is supposed to be dead; instead, identification with and loyalty to a nation-state is resurging all over the world. This course introduces students to the study of nationalism, with an emphasis on the following questions: How are national identities formed? Are there “good” and “bad” nationalisms? How does nationalism manifest in our everyday lives? Explore how and why nationalism is rising in an era of globalization, and what it means to be a national and global citizen in the 21st century.
You’ll be encouraged to draw on your own national experiences and responses to help illuminate our discussions.
