Speaker: Dr. Amanda Vincent, Professor, IOF
The world’s quirky and iconic seahorses have quite a tale to tell, about facing enormous conservation challenges and helping inspire solutions that matter globally.
It all started when Amanda wanted to understand how male pregnancy in seahorses informs our understanding of sex differences across animals. That led Amanda to conduct the first underwater studies on seahorses. On discovering that these fishes were being heavily fished and traded, she launched Project Seahorse, a marine conservation organization. Project Seahorse builds knowledge and then translates it into effective action, creatively and collaboratively, at many scales.
Amanda and her team pioneered conservation assessments of seahorses, which led them to catalyse the first global export regulations for marine fishes. They have worked in scores of countries to generate 35 protected areas, regulate a range of fisheries and create community science initiatives. All their frontline conservation work is underpinned by rigorous research and conducted in collaboration with national counterparts. Come and hear a story about determination, hope and #OceanOptimism.
