Thu, November 7, 2013 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM HENRY ANGUS BUILDING. Dr. Janette Bulkan, University of British Columbia Forest Resources Management, with commentators Professor Margot Young, Faculty of Law and Dr. Leila Harris, Institute for Resources, Environment & Sustainability
This talk will feature Janette Bulkan of the Faculty of Forestry reporting back on fieldwork that was carried out in July 2013 in collaboration with local research assistants in five indigenous Makushi communities in central Guyana. The discussion will consider the opportunities for meaningful collaboration that are opened up by global-to-local schemes for biodiversity protection and the challenges to potential collaboration posed by external actors, including the State. How might a number of indigenous communities that share a communal legal title to part of their traditional lands deliberate on and devise management rules for the collaborative stewardship of their lands? How can such processes unfold in a context of sustained external authoritarian political pressure?
A free event, open to the public. Light lunch provided.
