Us vs. Them: Othering in the Community
While communities have been diversifying and working towards inclusion, many folks still feel othered. Othering is a process that creates an us versus them power dynamic in which people can be treated differently due to perceived differences. From voluntourism to being token representation, this dynamic can show up in many ways. This event serves as a space for participants to engage in dialogue and share experiences about othering. Participants are invited to arrive 10 minutes early for food and are asked to bring their own container. Come join the UBC Sustainability Ambassadors of the Justice cohort for snacks and conversation on othering! UBC has been diversifying and working towards inclusion, many students still feel othered.

Beyond ‘Climate Refugees’: Understanding Global and Local Communities Displaced by Climate Change

Exploring the Impact of the Global Biodiversity Framework
The Convention on Biological Diversity has just ratified its newest policy to guide global conservation for the next decade: The Kunming-Montreal Framework for Global Biodiversity. The previous framework, the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, was adopted in 2010 and expired in 2020. The post-2020 framework builds on the progress made under the Aichi targets and includes new and ambitious goals to be achieved by 2030. Join UBC Students in exploring the significance of the Kunming-Montreal Framework for Global Biodiversity, including the key developments of the Framework, as well as the important takeaways at a local level. Open to the UBC Community, be sure to stick around afterwards for "The Role of Emotions in Saving the Planet: An Existential Toolkit for the Climate Movement" with Dr. Sarah Ray afterwards!

An Economic Environmental Crisis: What's the Connection Between it All?
A movie night and panel discussion! Equal but differentiated responsibility is a concept we have all heard of, yet, it is often ignored that economic injustices are deeply embedded in the climate movement. Nonetheless, people are fighting back. The documentary 'This Changes Everything' by Avi Lewis introduces us to four climate activists standing up against economic powers. This event captures the spirit of those climate fighters by streaming their story and further inspires action through an engaging panel discussion with Avi Lewis and other local activists afterwards. Be ready to learn about economic injustice but also about what can be done despite it.
