Global overview of ecological restoration, examining perspectives and practices in diverse ecosystems worldwide. Causes of degradation, motivations for restoration (including cultural underpinnings), restoration objectives (biodiversity, ecosystem function, ecosystem services), restoration practices (and their evolution over time), challenges and lessons learnt. Credit will be granted for only one of CONS 505 or UFOR 403.

Design within the context of various analytical lenses including ecological, climatic, social, political, cultural and historical influences.

Environmental sustainability, sustainable livelihoods, development effectiveness, institutions, agency, ethics, and well-being. Theoretical approaches, case studies, and community-based learning.

Techniques and problems in benefit-cost analysis of public projects. Examination of alternative approaches to public decision-making such as cost-effectiveness analysis and multiple-objective frameworks. Case studies of projects in the areas of natural resources, the environment, human resources, public services, and transportation.

Economic analysis applied to problems of land use. Rent theory. Land valuation. Land conservation. Techniques for assessing economic efficiency of land use. Effects of institutions and public policies on land use.

Divergence in the world economy, poverty, consequences of initial inequality, institutions, the impact of history, recent developmental experience--some case studies, labour and credit markets, the trickle down process.

Application of economic analysis to the management of nonrenewable natural resources. Emphasis is placed on the economics of alternative energy sources. Other topics include mineral economics, criteria for the optimal use of resources, and measurement of resources.

The goal of this course is for provide an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of textiles and textile art within one’s own lived experience, within our ecological, social and cultural context and within a historic and international context. We will contemplate gender roles in relation to textiles both present, past, within various contexts. Pedagogies in this course are informed by Indigenous Ways of Knowing, of ecological responsibility, of lived-experience, Slow pedagogies, and of experiential practices found in studio ‘making’. Here we will explore a cross-section of artistic, artisanal and practices involving the fibre arts and place this within a context of contemporary textile industries. Amongst practices covered, we will look the basics of working with wool, and learning the attributes various fibres; we will learn the basics of knitting, weaving (of various kinds); felting, embroidery, quilting. Students will have the opportunity to fully explore two major studio projects that reflect their own learning and artistic goals, and one collaborative project.
