Foundational concepts in the critical study of cultural, historical, social, and political factors that impact language loss, retention, and revival. Introducing strategies and practical methodologies for collaborative, interdisciplinary, community-based documentation and revitalization projects for First Nations and Indigenous languages.

Development of skills in the documentation, transcription and analysis of grammatical structures in endangered languages, focusing on the diversity within BC Aboriginal languages. Applied techniques in documentation, workflow and multi-media digital annotation, guided by community-based ethical protocols and conservation/revitalization goals.

Critical exploration of the links between linguistic, biological and cultural diversity; including connections with linguistic relativity, linguistic identity, language and place; and strategies for collective, interdisciplinary action to promote and support the protection of languages, cultures, and the environment.

Critical study of the historical, social, cultural, political, and economic factors impacting on language loss, retention, and revival. Research on and application of methodologies for collaborative, trans-disciplinary, community-based documentation and revitalization of BC's Indigenous linguistic heritage.

Conceptualization and scientific analyses of global problems in food and nutrition; complexities of food habits and malnutrition in various cultures around the world.

Theoretical and practical application of international nutrition and food security knowledge and skills. International field placement for a minimum of 12 weeks with pre-departure sessions. Restricted to students in International Nutrition Major or by permission of instructor.

The historical, cultural, political, economic and legal issues that inform the experiences of Indigenous peoples in Canada, examined from both Indigenous and non-Indigenous perspectives. Credit will be granted for only one of FNIS 100, FNSP 100, or FNSP 200.

The historical, cultural, political, and activist roots of contemporary Indigenous feminisms. Indigenous feminist methodologies, theory, and praxis in relation to contemporary Indigenous politics and social justice movements. Credit will be granted for only one of FNSP 401D, FNIS 451, or FNSP 451.

Origins of sustainable forest management; criteria and indicators of sustainable forest management used globally and how these will need to be adapted to our changing climate.

Potential impacts of climate change on global forest systems. Concepts and techniques of climate change modelling; adaptive management strategies.

Interdependence and dynamics of different forest ecosystem services and how they contribute to sustainable forest management and community livelihoods.

Analytical methods in forest hydrology and their applications in the planning of forest operations with a focus on the hydrologic and hydraulic design procedures for stream crossings.

Characteristics, processes and sources of economic growth, role of agricultural and resource sectors in economic growth, analysis of output and input markets in those sectors, policy failures, tools for empirical analysis of rural markets, growth, and the environment.

Market failure and gains from trade in the presence of natural resource externalities; the multilateral trading system and the environment; case studies in trade-related environmental impacts.

Data applied to resource use and conservation, estimating the causal impact of policies and economic development on environmental outcomes, application of empirical methods to problems in environmental economics and resource conservation. Knowledge of R is beneficial but not required.

An overview of forests and forestry. Survey of the disciplines, areas of study, and values that frame sustainable management of forests in BC and the world. Assignments focus on critical thinking and written communication skills.

Current issues and cases in Forestry and Land and Food Systems are examined with a focus on integration of first-year subjects and exposure to both First Nations and Western perspectives.

The Ecosystem concept; energy biomass and nutrient cycling; the physical environment; population and community ecology; succession, Biogeoclimatic classification and some coastal ecosystems. Available only through Distance Education.

Introduction to growth of trees and forests with emphasis on evolutionary, ecological and environmental aspects. Not available for credit to undergraduate students in the Faculty of Forestry.
